Dear BMFA member in Scotland,
I’m Alasdair Sutherland. At the 2024 Scotland Area AGM I was elected chairman of our Area for a two year term, 2025-2026.
Until becoming chairman I had no idea how the BMFA worked. Long term members will know that the BMFA is split into geographic Areas, and you may know that the Scotland Area was formed as Area 15 of the BMFA quite recently, to represent all members in Scotland.
Each Area has its own committee, including a secretary, and a treasurer to look after the Area’s bank account and finances, and a delegate to represent us at BMFA Central. However all dealings with the London based CAA and Government, and membership enquiries and fees, are handled by BMFA Central office staff who are a very valuable asset.
Please let me introduce to you all the Scotland Area committee members for 2026, starting with the five posts mandated by the Area Constitution:-

Chairman – Alasdair Sutherland. Living in Kilmacolm, west of Glasgow. I’ve flown fixed wing R/C since 1976. I’ve tried slope soaring and powered models, sport, aerobatics, scale, waterplanes, and I’ve used electric, glow, petrol and turbine power. Member of BMFA, SAA, LMA & JMA, Clyde Valley, Garnock Valley and Falkirk clubs.

Area Delegate to BMFA Areas Council – and Area Vice Chairman – Jordan Pedersen, elected at March meeting to serve 2 years, until AGM 2027. I have been an aviation enthusiast from young, attending airshows and a few museums, always had an interest in the R/C world, I’ve had various cars/ boats/helis/planes even a few bb firing tanks. Starting to work my way into different planes over time, mainly scale.

Secretary –Alison Hicks. I live in Paisley and have been a member of the Clyde Valley Flyers for 20 years. I am the daughter of a Derbyshire coal miner and aeromodeller, and our home was a 1922 wooden Boulton and Paul mail order kit bungalow, which is now my sister’s. I was surrounded by planes, trains and automobiles of all kinds whilst growing up and my hobbies still reflect that. Due to family commitments I have not flown much over recent years but I am hoping to get my old faithful Puppeteer back in the air, and possibly a 5th scale SE5.

Treasurer – Nigel Miscampbell – elected at Nov 2025 AGM to serve 2 years, until AGM 2027.

Achievement Scheme Co-ordinator – Nick Reeves – elected at March meeting to serve 2 years, until AGM 2027.

Drone Flyers Representative – Michael Williamson: Interested in stick and tissue tow line gliders in my early teens, then model rockets and anything airborne, (then women lol). Fast forward the years and I am now 51 this year, (don’t feel it, but my body does) about 10 years ago I got back into the flying hobby big time, and that bug came back strong as ever with the RC drone, I will try to fly anything safe. I spent the last 10 years focused on building, flying, understanding drones and by using first person view etc, I have my own little work shop and most of the tools I will ever need, I also like to build my own custom builds, I still do a little bit of model rocket fun now and then, and still stunt a good kite every now and then, I have dabbled in RC cars and RC boats, my collection of RC toys is most likely a bit over the top for most people, but it seems its a life long love, I would just like to give a little back to this hobby I love by helping out who I can with what I can.

[The Area chairman regards this post as important since our Area has a large number of Country Members, that’s basically any BMFA member in Scotland who is not registered under a BMFA affiliated club. The BMFA regards all Country members collectively as a club in that area, and they should have a representative at meetings.] -
