March Meeting

Hello all members. The next Area meeting of members is a week away, on Tuesday March 10th, on Zoom at 7 pm.

You need to register to attend the meeting, by clicking the link below, filling in the form with your name and BMFA number, and you will get an email returned with a link to join the meeting. You should also have received an email with the link and agenda, sent Monday 2nd March.

Registration for BMFA Scotland meeting 10 March 2026

Question:-

Are we prepared to sit back and allow our hobby/sport/pastime to wither and die? If you are in Scotland, in a club that is affiliated to the BMFA, then please get involved, in the meetings and activities. We are all entirely dependent on the BMFA for our continued existence.

If you are in a club that is not affiliated, then why not get your club affiliated?

If you are not presently in a club, the BMFA has an officer dedicated to representing you at meetings. All the ‘country members’ effectively constitute a club, so stay in touch at meetings and through the “Country Members’ Representative”, via the Area website www.bmfascotland.org

For administration the BMFA is divided into Areas, and each Area consists of a number of Clubs. The next general members meeting of the Scotland Area is on Tuesday March 10th, via Zoom call from 7pm and lasts typically one to two hours.

All BMFA members are encouraged to take part in these meetings. When votes are taken, each club gets a vote and each club should appoint one member to exercise that vote by holding up a piece of card, white side to vote yes, black side to vote no, very simple. The meetings are run by the club officers, as laid down by the BMFA AREA CONSTITUTION. I quote:-

4.1. The Area is managed by the elected Officers, who must all be individual members of the BMFA. Officers must be persons of good standing; they shall not be bankrupt, in receivership, or of unsound mind. The minimum Officer roles for a functional committee are:

4.1.1. Chairman Alasdair Sutherland

4.1.2. Area Delegate* vacant

4.1.3. Secretary Alison Hicks

4.1.4. Treasurer Nigel Miscampbell

4.1.5. Achievement Scheme Co-ordinator* vacant

plus the following officers where possible:

4.1.6. Vice Chairman vacant

4.1.7. Communications Officer(s) vacant

4.1.8. Outreach Officer vacant

4.1.9. British Drone Flyers Representative Michael Williamson

4.1.10. Flying Disciplines Representative(s) vacant

Country Member representative Kenneth Ward

As you can see we are seriously understaffed in Scotland. At the meeting on March 10th we need to fill the minimum posts*, and would also like to fill the other posts, with a BMFA member.

  • Vice-chairman

  • Achievement Scheme Co-ordinator (ASC)*

  • Area Delegate*

  • Communications Officer (IT)

  • Flying Disciplines Representative

  • Outreach Officer

Most of the work is done by the officers already in place, but a bit of back-up would be very welcome. The posts we want to get filled are as follows.

A Vice Chairman may support the role and deputise in the Chairman’s absence.

The Area Delegate is a voting member of Areas Council (BMFA Central) and is expected to attend about 4 meetings per year (on Zoom) to represent Scotland, and liaise between the Areas Council and the Scotland Area. If the Delegate must miss a meeting he/she may send an alternate.

The Achievement Scheme Co-ordinator (ASC) holds contact information for all the Chief Examiners and Club Examiners in the Area. If a BMFA member wants an A or B test, the ASC can put him in contact with suitable examiners, or suggest a forthcoming Training and Testing event. A club with no Examiner may request the ASC to suggest a nearby examiner whom they may invite. Or a club may express an interest in hosting a T&T event, or in getting a member recognised as a Club Examiner. The ASC need not do much Testing if any, just coordinate testing activity.

Communications Officers – The BMFA suggests two people plus assistants to promote Area news and activities using website content and social media presence as required.

Outreach Officer liaises with the Outreach Director and is responsible for the promotion and organisation of all Outreach activities within the Area. (I imagine that might involve coordinating club and member contacts with Air Cadet or school groups etc.)

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NOW

Before the March 10th meeting, make sure that your club has a voting rep who will join in, with a voting card (about 10 cm across, black side, white side).

Discuss among your members who should volunteer for which vacant posts and instruct your voting rep to propose them (all proposing and seconding is done by voting reps, not officers).

Discuss putting a member forward as Club Examiner.

Discuss hosting a Training and Testing event, or some other Club event or national event that the Area could help with.

Collect information on any model related event that the BMFA should mention on the website. (See Diary Dates entry).
